TheEdge July '10 |
In May I completed a Dreamweaver/Html course in Cape Town and I'm now updating my website myself and have some big plans to create some websites in the future so stay tuned.
This past month I have also been working as Acting Editor on contract at The Edge, a business magazine in Doha, Qatar in the Middle East. It has been a really interesting challenge and welcome evolution in my career, with much more further potential – so it looks like I might be over here for a while. I’ll let you know more as the situation unfolds, otherwise please follow my tweets from the Middle East on Twitter here. Otherwise please read on for news of my latest articles published around the world, including Mens Health and the Mail & Guardian in SA, The Surfers Journal in the US and UK magazine Huck (see below). |

About Miles |
|
I began my career at
Wavelength magazine in the UK in the early 90s as a reporter
and Associate Editor, worked as a photographer’s assistant
and later joined Atoll Media in South Africa for a decade,
first as an editor and then publisher of Blunt magazine
and was an Atoll company director until late 2006. Since
then I have been working as my own independent entity, Miles
Masterson Media and have branched out into video and PR
and consulting. I have had work published in Mens Health,
Sports Illustrated and the Sunday Times Lifestyle supplement
in South Africa among many other local publications, as
well as major features in The Surfers Journal in the US
and Huck magazine in the UK. I also provide a number of
South African publications and websites with editing and
copy-editing, provide PR services to companies and do video
work. Whilst my roots are in surfing and extreme sports,
I am versatile writer and journalist with commissioned articles
covering mainly health and fitness, environmental issues,
travel features and mainstream sports both in print and
online. My first book How To Surf in South Africa was also
released through Penguin in early 2009 and has been well
received by South African surfers and critics alike.
My Full Skill Set Includes: Extreme Sports; Sports, Health & Fitness; Environmental
and Travel Writing; Editor, Copy Editor; Copy Writer; PR and Media
Consultant; Author and Blogger; Photographer; Videographer; Photo Editor; Video
Editor; Dreamweaver/Html/CSS

Mens Health - 'Peak Performance - Training at Altitude'
The July Issue of Mens Health contains my first full feature in the magazine, which is on training at and for altitude. It features input the likes of ultra marathon athlete extraordinaire Ryan Sandes, one of his mentors and one of SA’s most incredible runners Elana Meyer, Professor Andrew Bosch at the Cape Town Sports Science Research Institute, and comments from training management at from both WP and Sharks rugby. And their verdict on whether coastal athletes are at a disadvantage at altitude? Read the article to find out. www.menshealthsa.co.za |
The Surfers Journal - Twiggy Baker/Dungeons
My third major feature in the esteemed US surfing publication The Surfers Journal is a joint history of Dungeons the wave (the first time this has been done properly and so extensively in print). This is intertwined with the story of South African big wave king Grant ‘Twiggy’ Baker, intersecting at his relationship with the wave, where he won the Red Bull Big Wave Africa event in 2008 and has been the site of many of his greatest performances. According to Scott Hulet, TSJ editor, the article was “a hit” in the US so if you haven’t seen it, subscribe to this reader-supported magazine, they need and deserve your patronage. www.thesurfersjournal.com |
HUCK - Special Investigation: Plastic Pollution in the Ocean
Seems to be becoming an annual pattern now with Huck, the brilliant UK-based surf-skate-snow-style earth conscious magazine, that I do an enviro feature. Last year’s was on sharks and this year it is a major investigation into the substance that is a big part of our lives, and all the products we use, consume and throw away (most ending up in the sea): plastic. The truth about the plastic debris situation in the world’s oceans and beaches is scary and formidable but there is some good news at the end too. www.huckmagazine.com |
Mail & Guardian - Greening The Future Awards Supplement
Staying on an environmental theme, I also recently had my first article published in national South African newspaper The Mail & Guardian. Okay, it was only in their Green The Future Awards supplement, but I will still take it another goal achieved. The story is an article on how AECI overhauled their waste facility on the South Coast of KZN, turning it from a toxic waste dump into a thriving animal, bird and green sanctuary. |
XXL Awards Promo Video
Twiggy Baker makes a second appearance here as he is featured in a couple of video clips I sold to a production company in the US who created the promo video for the 2010 Billabong XXL Big Wave Surfing awards. The footage, some of it exclusively shot by me, as there was no one else filming the whole session, is from the day of huge days in 2009 at Dungeons. The feature ran on ESPN a few times so I’m pretty stoked about that. For all the footage from that day check out my clip on YouTube here. |
In the Pipeline...
Apart from a few other minor things here and there that is about it for July. Been hard at work here in the Middle East, though I do have a few other long term projects due for publication soon, including an article on Corporate Yoga for stress relief in Complete Yoga, a report on the 2010 Cape Town Design Indaba in VW Magazine, a surf travel story and photos in Huck on South Sumatra in Indonesia and a major feature in The Red Bulletin magazine later in the year involving some of South Africa's most unsung extreme sportsmen, but which I will leave as a surprise.
